Leonora Minott

Leonora Green was born in December, 1850, in Jamaica, according to records found so far, which do not include a birth or baptismal record.
There seems to be no record of her marriage to John Thomas Minott, which probably took place in 1874, if the notation on a 1900 New York census entry, that the couple had been married for 26 years, is correct.
She died in Manhattan on January 1, 1924, aged 73. She had travelled to New York in August 1923, to stay with her son William at 36 W 136th Street.

"And what shall I say about his spouse, who has been joined with him in this memorial service? She was a type of the careful Jamaican, modest, and looked well to the ways of her household and ever had the fear of God before her eyes. No change of environment could destroy those principles; today her children call her blessed. That monument speaks volumes. She belonged to the mothers of the "old school", it is true. Would that we could produce more of them in larger numbers today. There would be less of scandal in the Law Courts, and more of that Empire-building of character in the home - that solid bulwark of our nation which we so much need."

This 1900 New York census record gives most of the
available information on Mrs Minott.

From an entry in the Ellis Island records in 1909, when
Mr and Mrs Minott revisited New York, staying with their
daughter, Mrs Price, the couple had previously lived in
the USA from 1893 to 1905.
